BASIC INFORMATION

Weather: Our climate follows four distinct seasons. The temperatures vary considerably during the year, particularly during the winter period. July is normally the warmest month with an average temperature of just below 20°C. February is generally the coldest with an average of just below 0°C.

Language: Mother tongue is Danish, which is closely related to both Swedish and Norwegian. However, most Danes speak English well, especially among the young generation. German, French and Spanish are also taught in school.

Politics: Denmark has a well-established tradition of stability and democratic rule going back to the age of the Vikings. The country has a one-chamber parliament called the 'Folketing' consisting of 179 members, based in Copenhagen. Denmark is a member of the European Union, the United Nations, NATO, and the Nordic Council.

Religion: According to the Constitution, Danes have freedom of religion, but the vast majority belong to the Danish State Church which is Evangelical Lutheran. Christianity was introduced around 1000 AD, and with the Reformation in 1536, Protestantism succeeded Catholicism as the predominant religion. The churches you see today in inner Copenhagen, with a few exceptions, date back to the mid 1500's.
